ABOUT McKENNEY FLOOR COVERING

  Our company, McKenney Floor Covering, was incorporated in Nicholasville, Kentucky, in February 1981. Carl McKenney, and his son, Joe, purchased a flooring store on Main Street in Nicholasville and started McKenney Floor Covering. The McKenney family’s activities in flooring started long before that occurrence. In the 40’s Carl McKenney worked for Laval Cleaners in Lexington. He would go out to homes in the Lexington area and bring in the large area rugs used at that time and clean them. He also did many repairs, re-knotting, stitching, and repairing edging on the rugs which were then cleaned and he delivered them back to the homes to put them back where they belonged. In the late 40’s Carl was one of the first two gentlemen in the central Kentucky area to be sent to school for training on the revolutionary new broadloom (wall-to-wall) carpeting that was just being marketed. Thus, his carpet installation career started. Joe, and his two brothers, Tom and Michael, grew up helping their Dad during summer vacations. Carl installed carpet until illness forced him to quit in his 80th year. He was full of stories of working jobs such as Elizabeth Taylor’s dressing room in Danville during the filming of “Raintree County”, or working for such well-known people as Colonel Sanders, and Adolph Rupp. Carl was a true craftsman who took great pride in exceeding the customer’s expectations.

He would go the extra mile or more to insure the very best job possible in any situation. This characteristic is continued by his sons. In 1985 Carl sold his share of McKenney Floor Covering to Joe’s wife, Linda, because he just wanted to install and not be tied to management duties. Joe and Linda own and manage the business to this day. Both Joe and Linda have degrees in education from UK. Linda taught high school mathematics and Joe worked with orthopedically handicapped students. In 1986 McKenney Floor Covering moved from Main Street to its present location at 2148-B Lexington Road.

In addition to carpeting, we do pre-finished hardwood, ceramic tile, sheet vinyl, duraceramic, durastone, floating laminates and hardwoods, and commercial floorings.
